Why the browser's Print to PDF is not enough
The obvious way to save a ChatGPT answer as a PDF is File, Print, Save as PDF. It prints the page you are looking at, which is the problem. You get the whole conversation, including your prompts, the "ChatGPT said" labels, the sidebar or a blank column where it was, and, in dark mode, pages of near-black background. Page breaks fall wherever the browser's layout happens to end: in the middle of a table row, three lines into a code block, or right after a heading so the heading sits alone at the bottom of a page. Links keep their blue colour but the URL is gone. The text is often rendered as a bitmap when the browser cannot embed the web font, so it cannot be searched or selected.
MDtoDOCX builds the PDF from the answer's Markdown instead of from the rendered page. That gives it a document model, with headings, paragraphs, lists, tables and code blocks as distinct objects, and the layout engine can make decisions a screen printer cannot.
Page breaks that respect structure
Headings are kept with the paragraph that follows them, so a heading is never the last line on a page. Paragraphs carry widow and orphan control: at least two lines stay together on each side of a break. Tables that span a page repeat their header row at the top of the next page, and a row is never split between pages. List items stay whole. Blockquotes and callouts are kept together when they fit on one page. If you want each section on its own page, set New page at to Heading 1, or Heading 1 and 2, and the converter inserts breaks before those headings; an explicit break is also honoured wherever the Markdown contains \newpage or an <!-- pagebreak --> comment.
Code blocks never split across pages
Code is where printed AI answers usually fall apart. A fenced block that fits on a page is kept together: if it would straddle a break, the whole block moves to the next page and the space before it is left blank rather than half a function being orphaned. A block longer than a page is split only at line boundaries, with a small continued marker at the top of the continuation, so no line is ever cut in half vertically. Long lines wrap at the code area's edge with a return glyph at the wrap point instead of being clipped, which matters for shell commands and URLs. Leading spaces and tabs are preserved exactly, with tabs rendered at four columns, and common languages get syntax colouring that still reads correctly when printed in greyscale.
Print quality
The PDF contains vector text, so you can select, search and copy it, and it stays sharp at any zoom or on any printer. Fonts are embedded and subsetted so the file looks identical on a machine that does not have them. Images that ChatGPT generated or that you added are placed at up to 300 dpi and not downsampled. Table borders are hairlines that print cleanly rather than screen-weight grey lines. Everything is black or dark grey on white regardless of the theme ChatGPT was using. Links are clickable in the PDF and, if you prefer, the URL can be printed as a footnote so the paper copy keeps it. The file carries proper metadata: the first heading becomes the PDF title, and the creation date is set.
Equations and tables
Pipe tables become real tables with estimated column widths and a shaded header row. For math, the free converter prints the LaTeX source in a monospace run so nothing is lost. Pro's Typeset equations renders $…$, \(…\), $$…$$ and \[…\] as vector glyphs in the PDF, with display equations centred on their own line. Because a PDF is a final format, there is no "editable equation" question here, only whether it is typeset or not.
Claude, Gemini and DeepSeek
All three produce Markdown too, and the same steps apply: use the site's Copy control and paste here. The browser extension adds a PDF button next to the Word button under every answer on chatgpt.com, claude.ai, gemini.google.com and chat.deepseek.com, so you can skip the copy step entirely. If you need an editable document rather than a printable one, the ChatGPT to Word converter uses the same input and produces a .docx.
